I spent half of the summer of 1997 as a nobody. I spent the first five days struggling to breathe in a hospital in Warsaw, but as my visa had ran out, I could not be treated. So I discharged myself and made the long coach trip back to London. Arrived in London on the afternoon of Friday 6th June. Late that night I passed out. I have vague recollections of waking up in hospital in London early on the morning of the 7th June, shortly before 6.30am. I could no longer breathe. I called a nurse to tell her that I couldn't breathe and I was dying. Then everything went black.
The next thing I can remember after that is waking up in another hospital bed in a small room in another ward of the same hospital. I'm woken by the sound of a fan and the fact that it's very warm. I need to go take a pee. I carefully lift myself up in the hospital bed to find a bathroom. I go to stand up, become dizzy and fall on the floor. As I'm trying to figure out what is going on four nurses quickly enter the room, wearing face masks, aprons and gloves and help me back into bed. I tell them I need to go pee. They tell me that I'm in isolation, am not allowed to leave the small room and that a bedpan will be brought to me.
I also learn that it's shortly after 3pm and it's the 15th July 1997. The song quoted is the first song I hear on the hospital radio. I have vague memories of the beginning of June and a lot of crazy memories thereafter. I'm confused.....continue reading
