Awakening through relationship

A man is moving a boat across a lake in thick fog. He sees another boat coming towards him out of the mist. So he yells and shouts at who he thinks is in the other boat. Only at the last minute he swerves his boat out of the way. Alongside the other boat he discovers that the boat is empty. He also discovers that he's much closer to the shore than he thought he was.
