I'm going to start this post by writing about blocking. Blocking was something I did as a stage director and when I directed my independent films. Blocking refers to the first stage of working with the script and a cast of actors. It was meant to counter the practise of learning and memorizing lines, which is a major part of what an actor does on stage or in front of a camera. The problem is if you're memorizing and trying to remember lines you can very easily forget a line. If you forget a line or find it hard to remember you can fail to project your character to the audience or you can come out with what is known as a 'blooper'.
So what is blocking?
Blocking is where I would meet with the cast of actors and do some preliminary work on the script prior to rehearsals. We would go through the script and break it down into blocks or chunks of the narrative or storyline. Each block in the script would centre around some event or progression in the storyline. This was to help the actors develop a holistic perspective of the whole play or film script. It was done so that the actors could develop a shared sense of the narrative by understanding what was supposed to be happening in each block, what role their character played in the event, and what they were expected to say and do.
